New departures experience

A two year project that started in October 2008 is set to bring a brand new international departures experience for travellers, friends, and family. The new and improved area will be a space that Kiwis can be really proud of and will ensure international visitors' last experience of New Zealand is a great one.

Leaving New Zealand

Having upgraded the arrivals experience, the airport is now refreshing the way in which travellers leave New Zealand. We intend to make leaving New Zealand a memorable experience that will make Kiwis proud. Click here to see the latest artists impressions of Phase 1.

There will be more space, shops, dining options and services available airside (after security) for departing travellers and better use of the space in the public area landside. The key changes will include:

A revamp of the whole departure area, both before and after security
A more spacious and contemporary space to relax and unwind
A bigger and better area for emmigration processing and security screening
New and improved cafe and dining areas
Lighter, brighter and more modern interiors
Clearer lines of sight during the departures process
A fabulous selection of shops and an enhanced duty free experience

Over the next two years airport users will notice a complete revamp of the first floor departures area with many existing shops being moved and some new and exciting stores coming in. All these changes will help ensure that our largest airport is serving New Zealand’s future.

Timetable

Construction will be completed in stages to minimise disruption to travellers and work on the departures area will be complete in December 2010.

As with many projects at the airport, construction has taken place on a "live" site, with traveller, staff and aircraft movements all continuing during construction.
