Marae

Maori marae invites visitors in Airport Marae

The traditional Maori meeting place (marae) at Auckland Airport was established through our work with local Maori (tangata whenua). We wanted to give visitors to Auckland and New Zealand the chance to enjoy, experience and explore this unique piece of local culture.

Because our marae is so special it has its very own website, click here for a direct link and learn more about this magnificent building.

Marae

As a traditional Maori meeting place, maraes hold considerable cultural and heritage significance for New Zealanders.

In partnership with the Tainui people, Auckland Airport’s Marae is used for a variety of activities by the airport and wider community.

These include:

  • official welcomes and farewelling of dignitaries
  • educational programmes
  • cultural events
  • the provision of comfort and shelter for bereaved families.

The Marae is a symbol of the airport’s relationship with the tangata whenua. It was developed with generous personal, monetary and material support from many individuals and organisations associated with the airport community. Original Marae adornments are used to create a welcoming place of unique, cultural beauty.

Adornments include:

  • carvings by Tainui carvers in the craft of whakairo
  • woven tukutuku panels
  • painted kowhaiwhai scroll designs, also given by the Tainui people.
